Wales follows Keeping learners safe (Welsh Government, last updated April 2022) and the Wales Safeguarding Procedures 2019. Scotland follows the National Guidance for Child Protection in Scotland 2021 . Northern Ireland follows Co-operating to Safeguard Children and Young People in Northern Ireland (October 2024 edition) .

Volunteers and DBS: the supervision exemption is removed From 1 September 2026 a volunteer who teaches, trains, instructs, cares for or supervises children is in regulated activity whether or not they are supervised. Enhanced DBS with children's barred list information is required. Re-audit existing volunteers, not just new ones, and start now because DBS turnaround is the constraint. The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 and the DBS system cover England and Wales . Scotland uses the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme (Disclosure Scotland). Northern Ireland uses AccessNI . The supervision exemption change does not apply in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026: What DSLs Need to Know Now

The DfE published Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026 on 7 July 2026. It comes into force on 1 September 2026 . Schools and colleges must continue to work to KCSIE 2026 until 31 August. The 2026 document is published now so schools can prepare over the summer. Key changes include: gender-questioning pupils, AI and deepfakes, mobile-phone-free schools, expanded child-on-child abuse definitions, online checks in safer recruitment, and the removal of the volunteer supervision exemption.

Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026: The Complete Hub

Working Together 2026 is already in force — it does not wait for September. Key changes include: Family Help replacing Early Help and S17, a 5-day EHE notification duty, strengthened expectations for kinship and care-experienced children, and a new care leaver death notification duty. If your safeguarding policy still references Working Together 2023, it needs updating now.
