You are the product
Free apps are not charities. What's being sold is your attention and your data.
Infinite scroll, autoplay, streaks, notification dots: all engineered to keep you on longer. Time on app is the money.
The algorithm
It learns what holds you, then serves more of it.
It narrows what you see. It hardens what you think. And it can walk someone toward extreme content one recommendation at a time.
Ask your own feed
What does this algorithm think I am? What does it think I fear, or want, or am insecure about?
Usually unnervingly accurate. It has watched you more closely than you watch yourself. Break the bubble on purpose.
Scams built for you
Young, optimistic, short of money, new to this. The fraud is engineered for exactly that, and it arrives inside apps you trust.
Muling. Crypto and investment fraud. Fake jobs harvesting your ID.
The one reflex
Easy money or a too-good return means hidden risk.
The risk did not vanish. It moved onto you, and you cannot yet see how.
Your footprint is a document
Tutors look. Employers look. A public account is public, and screenshots make even deleted posts last.
So be the author. Build it on purpose. It's the first version of you a stranger meets.
It runs both ways
Sharing a deepfake. Piling on. Forwarding an intimate image.
At your age that is conduct with real legal weight, and your record keeps it too.
Seeing is not believing
AI fakes photos, video, voices and whole profiles, cheaply and at scale.
Survival skill: verify important things through a second channel. Urgency plus a request for money or data is the classic tell.
One habit
Break your bubble. Or the too-good-to-be-true reflex. Or lock down your main account. Or second-channel verification.
One systems-level habit beats a hundred warnings. Pick yours.
