Methodology & data sources

Offence count: Knife or sharp instrument offences as defined by the Home Office. Includes homicide, attempted murder, threats to kill, assault with injury/intent, robbery, and sexual offences where a knife or sharp instrument was involved or threatened. Does not include possession-only offences (recorded separately).

Rate per 100,000: Calculated using ONS mid-year population estimates for each police force area (2023 estimates). Rate = (offences ÷ population) × 100,000. Rate per 100,000 is a more meaningful comparison than raw counts as it accounts for force area size.

City of London: The City of London Police serves a resident population of approximately 9,000–11,000 but a daytime working population of approximately 500,000. Its rate per 100,000 resident population (~380) is not comparable with other forces and is excluded from the colour scale.

Greater Manchester: Greater Manchester Police experienced data quality issues due to a new crime recording IT system implemented in 2023/24. Figures for this force area should be treated with caution.

Update schedule: Data updated annually following Home Office publication of full-year police recorded crime statistics (typically July/October). Last updated: May 2026 (data: year ending March 2024).
